The Road
Where Patience Walks & Rest Waits
Jeremiah 6:16
Thus says the Lord:
“Stand by the roads,
and look, and ask for
the ancient paths,
where the good way is;
and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.”
The Road
I’ve been on this road longer
than I want to admit—
Not because I’m brave,
but because I’m stubborn.
And maybe somewhere deep,
I believe He’s still working on me
even when I don’t see the fruit.
——
And I often wonder
what it would be like to walk away…
to choose a different road,
to carry a lighter load.
But when I try,
This pain,
It cripples me
An ache in my chest
my heart bound by anxiety,
beating too fast to rest.
——
Some days
I pray for escape,
other days
I beg for understanding.
But always, I wait.
Not passively,
but painfully—
like someone
who’s been promised rain
in the middle of a drought.
——
Most days I fall
to the weight of to-do lists,
Calendars that steal from me
the gifts You’ve already given:
borrowed time,
family that loves,
a sound mind,
a community that comes close.
——
I keep showing up.
Not because I have strength,
but because patience
is teaching me
how to love—
what I don’t yet hold.
How to trust—
what hasn’t happened yet.
How to bleed—
without bitterness.
——
To say the least, God,
you’ve blessed me
And when I loosen my grip,
Your grace carries the weight.
Teaching my clenched fists to loosen
I let go–
and what falls are chains
That once held me hostage
lies telling me my worth
was found anywhere but You.
So I rest.
——
This isn’t easy.
But God never asked for easy.
He asked for faith.
So I walk.
And I wait.
And I believe
that even this road,
with all its cracked silence,
is leading me Home.
——
I yoke myself to You,
learn from You—
humble and gentle.
You meet me,
arms outstretched.
You hold me
until my restless soul
finds the stillness
the world can’t give.
Last Embers:
Patience. Rest.
Two roads.
One Savior.
We walk. We wander.
We stumble. We wait.
We carry what breaks us.
We release what holds us.
And with every step—
whether slow or strong,
whether lost or led—
we find our way
back to the One
who walked it first.

God is so good and His creativity never ceases to amaze me. This poem is beautiful and a reminder to continue to — a b i d e — even when it makes no sense. Thank you, Jay, for opening your platform to collaboration!
The honesty, the ache, the waiting—it all feels like prayer woven into poetry. Thank you both for walking this road with such raw faith and reminding us that even in the silence, God is still leading us Home.
